How about saving yourself some money and using GMax. "gmax is a free 3D modeling and animation tool based on Discreet's award-winning 3ds max®. Not only do you get to customize your games with gmax, you also learn 3D design within a professional-level tool." I think that sounds a little more like what you are looking for. Then if you like it you can always get 3ds max. I'm not an artist and haven't used either of these products and am relying totally on what I have read to base my decision. I'm sure there are people who will know better than me around here, but GMax looked like quite a good learning tool to me.
