personally, i think they are a problem about the skill programming level of many subscribers.
perhaps, it must more valuable to create differents skill level projects, according to level of participants.
the idea to start with simple project to test the team work, is a good idea, just to according and organize the work. the biggest problem in managing a project, is to manage the work of all workers, not to have a knowledge.if the manager succeed, the project must succeed, big or small. so, start with a single and small project , for test, and go to a big project only after the small will be achieved. you must test and according your capacity to work in team.

I agree with Harri and Derold.
 
By developing a very simple game at first we can find out if we
are capable of just working as a team. If(When) we succeed we can
develop a larger project with the comfort of the whole concept of an
international team really works.
But I personally think that a Packman, Spaceinvader game is a bit to
shallow for this many developers. Letīs aim for a game like Final Fantasy,
The legend of Zelda or a game without state-of-the-art effects. ;-)
