[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] RE: game colleges
Well I just experienced what you guys are talking about. I have been out of the Navy for almost two years now. Years ago I decided that it was time for me to get off my a$$, get out of my dead end job, and get my education. I couldnt afford school on my own and found that: if you dont have experience you cant get a good job and you cant get good experience unless you have a good job (catch 22.) Anyway, I decided that I could do four years in the military working with computers, get school paid for and get the starting experience. I am a surfer so I decided I would go in the Navy. I got the GI Bill but they screwed me out of the Navy College Fund. I took the asvab test and I got into the Data Processing Tech program (IT/MIS tech.) So I went to boot camp, then to my tech school. When I got to the school I found out that depending on your class ranking at the end of school you get to pick first out of all of the orders that come through. So I made sure I was first in the class. I chose a shore command but others got screwed and were sent overseas, to ships etc. Now had I joined to see the world that would have been nice but this fit right into my agenda. So while I was serving on shore I was also going to school. The Navy has a program for active duty that pays 75% of your tuition (you dont have to use the GI bill or NCF while you are in.) Anyway I am out now and one semester away from graduating and everything worked out great. However had I been sent to a ship I would probably be a few years behind in my knowledge and schooling. The Navy was not only a great training, and schooling experience but a great life experience as well. You learn alot about yourself when you are in the military and you are put in various situations. The military is very much a class system. Officers / Enlisted, for the most part the officers are the thinkers and the enlisted are the doers. The enlisted have to swallow alot of pride everyday. Acting crazy to get out is a sh*tty thing to do. People that do stuff like that are cowards and have alot to learn about honor, responsibility and being a patriot to their country. That was another great thing about my Navy exp is that I can say that I honorably served my country. On another note, I would not recommend the nuke program. Nukes are usually sent to subs or carriers etc. They dont put them on shore. J PS. I am willing to answer any questions that you may have in this area as well. -----Original Message----- From: Ben Humphrey [mailto:benjina@mindspring.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2000 8:38 PM To: gameprogrammer@gameprogrammer.com Subject: Re: game colleges I almost did that! They say that the program is so intense, that a huge percentage of the people have to see a psychiatrist to cope with it. The reason why they will give you so much to start is because they know that you could be making almost 100K plus if you weren't in the navy, so after the 6 years they make you enlist, they will give you like a HUGE bonus (30 - 50K) to stay with them. The problem with that is, unless you are an officer, life in the navy sucks royaly. I had a friend who went in, acted crazy, then was let go. Don't do it! :) Unless you have nothing else going for you, otherwise, it's a great way to get a good education.
