Hiya Dustin,
Depending on where you eventually go, you will come to realise a few
things:
- Colleges will require you to take classes which have little or nothing
to do with your major. This is an attempt to "round out" the students'
knowledge base. :) At the campus I had attended, CS degree's required
quite a bit of humanities and social studies related courses.
- Classes related to your major will often not cover as much or as in
depth as you would like. This can be because the professors are jaded,
don't arrive, teach via proxy via an assitant or a television screen or
web site. In such cases, striking out on your own and doing self-study
or forming a club/group to do specific study on the topic you and your
group wants to learn about would be more helpful and much quicker going.
- Make sure the campus you go to will have a good department and program
for the degree you're after. A bad department or degree program at an
expensive school will be no better or worse than a well planned program
and well structured department at a low-cost school.
- Try not to overload your schedule with classes and work.
( Heh heh.. mainly stuff a counselor would tell you anyways, but thought
it worthwhile to mention. ^_^;)
But you will find that the point of schools in general is to give you a
"formal" or an agreed upon foundation of learning for a particular
degree. This foundation may not be 100% correct for what you need to do or
might be completely wrong. Whatever the case, learning takes place on your
own personal time. This is especially so if the professor teaches out of
the book verbatim.
You + Determination/Enthusiasm + Internet + Caffeine = Higher Learning. :)
(Well, sorta.)
Good luck,
Wing. (Speaking of which... need to finish up my degree. ^_^;; Bad
job! Distracting me from getting my schoolwork done!)
