2D Game engine location

Halo!

Can some one help me here puleez? I am on the lookout for a 2D game
engine, that I will not mind purchasing from the creator, of course,
after the creator gives me a demo version where I can get a feel of the
engine's capabilities.

The game engine should allow me to develop possibly single .exe file
games, that maybe be big/small, with size being no constraint. I should
be able to use it across for various gaming themes.
