deterministic display

Hello GPers

I hope this is an appropriate place to post this question. I would like
to write an image to video memory and have it displayed at a time I have
control over rather than waiting for the next refresh of the screen. Does 
anyone know how to control the VGA to do this. I imagine it would be the 
sequencer portion of the chipset that might need a tweak. Would some sort of 
reset then set of the sequencer work?
