[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] RE: GRIPES!
Hi, thought i'd answer as i'm new to this mailing list. I'm studying for a Software Engineering degree at the moment and have got A-Level and university maths qualifications. It is rather worrying when programmers don't know what RTS and RPG stand for, but i suppose everyone has to start somewhere. I'm currently working on an RPG for the PC for the developers ButtMonkey software and hope to get a job in the industry after graduating from university. This mailing list seems rather varied in level, with people asking for physics models some days and how to draw to the screen on others. I think for basic questions such as pixel plotting and simple graphics and AI, beginners would be better off searching for "game programming" on a search engine. For any beginners i would recommend the following sites:- www.gameprog.com www.flipcode.com (more advanced) www.gamedev.com also i would suggest starting off writing small graphics demos to get the hang of graphics coding such as 2D stars or a fire or plasma effect. Another good starting point would be to buy one of Andre Lamothes books, DOS may be a bit outdated, but is still a good learning platform and he explains game coding concepts very well. Also i recommend "Windows Game Programming For Dummys", i know that some people have said that games programmers should not think of themselves as "dummys" but it really is an excellent book for learning DirectX. i hope this is of some interest. When I joined this list I was assuming a few things and that I may even get some help from some of you... Ive got a few questions for (almost) ALL OF YOU... 1) Have any of you got a degree, Software Engineering or Computer Science? 2) What kind of game programmer doesnt know what RTS and RPG mean? 3) Why are peopole answering messages with a "Im sorry I cant help"? Surely if you cant help there is no point answering is there! 4) I was wondering what the average time trying to nut out your own problems is, I have an ssumption it is less than 5 minutes. 5) Have any of you even completed high school maths(to those younger ignore this one). Im sorry that some of you got this when you dont deserve it. For those who are still learning the VERY BASICS, its easier to learn from a tutorial somewhere on the net. Ok off of gripes, I was wondering ... 1) how many people on this list have ever been employed by a game Development company cause im interested... 2) and how many are currently working on serious projects or working as a team on something. ------ thanx for listening And happy programming ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ================================================================= To SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE please visit http://gameprogrammer.com/mailinglist.html ================================================================= To SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE please visit http://gameprogrammer.com/mailinglist.html
